While doing Open Uni I have actually handed in essays early! No really, I have! Not this time though. I was prepared last week, but then G and I both got colds which hung on and hung on and we spent Friday and Saturday in Bradford too. So my essay is due at midnight tonight, I love being able to send them electronically! But because I’ve still got… oooh…. a good 6 hours to write around 1000 more words I’m still procrastinating and panic hasn’t replaced the continual self-doubt and… well… it’s not always easy to concentrate.
I am reminded of my first go at university, writing essays sitting in my room, work illuminated by the spotlight of a desk lamp, music on low, quiet. Then a trip to a computer room surrounded by the tap-tapping of other students typing up their essays.
So how does it compare to now? Let’s see, I planned it out sitting at a table at Fun Farm, a soft play warehouse. Now I’m writing it up and so there’s the music. It’s some kind of Lazy Town radio which plays the same three songs over and over again, at least I think there’s only three, there may be more, but they all sound the same. If the cable hadn’t been faulty there would be tv as well. So G can switch between watching a bit of tv, then leaping around the room to the music. Or switch to crashing cars, or fighting figures, or, currently, divesting his toy boxes of his toys. But while that chaos is going on at least he’s not actually expecting me to interact with his so I’m left in peace at the kitchen table…. well, sort of. When I started this Spiderman and some kind of robot thing were hanging for their lives off the edge of my folder. Then I got “a present for you!” what I’m going to do with two tiny, hard plastic tyres I don’t know. Then he helpfully covered my notes with a pack of Crayola superwashable supertip felt tips, “you can write your essay with these, look a red one, and a blue one”. I didn’t actually notice when the canon, tail wing of some aircraft, and walkie-talkie appeared.
Only 1 1/2 hours till his bedtime, maybe I’ll be a little more productive then!
