We had a plan for today, the first part of which was find a playground off Yarborough Road for G then go on and do the Museum of Lincolnshire Life. So, instead of a boring walk through town we (okay, I) decided we should walk along the wharf. Then instead of walking next to a busy road we (yeah, I) thought we could just continue walking along the canal, as we never had in that direction before, and could just cut across to Yarborough Road at some point.

But the canal kept going and well, we’d never gone in that direction before, and, well, there were all those pretty canal boats to look at!

We had a spot of lunch next to the canal and continued on. Mostly because there was now a golf course next to us so we couldn’t cut across, and also because we (well FP!) doesn’t believe in turning back.

We soon came to wilderness, and what was that in the distance, but the Pyewipe, pub of delicious food!

We wanted to go, but we were doing this holiday on a budget, and why bother going to civilisation when we could walk through wildlands and beneath a motorway!

It was at some point on this journey that I realised my dislike of horses might be a little irrational, maybe bordering on mild phobia. There were horses ahead of us on one side, but a handy gated bridge to cross. FP raised his voice at this point and I angrily whispered, “Will you be quiet because they’ll hear us.” Hmmm.
We went as far as we could in that direction and unfortunately it ended in the motorway, so we had to turn back. To keep our spirits up we bellowed out such classics as Ten Little Joeys (thanks The Wiggles!), The Ants Went Marching, Ten Green Bottles (I think we stopped at seven, it’s so boring!), and possibly our favourite Over the Deep Blue Sea, because any children’s song that mentions pirates and rum is good in our book!
FP made fun of me when we saw this sign and I suggested we follow it!

I have to say, public footpath signs are absolutely fabulous for adventures.
But we had a lovely walk beside a common. If we’d've walked across it we would have got to the playground, but there were…. horses! (They were quite nice though… all fenced up and all!)

We did find the playground and fun was had. Unfortunately, by the time we got to the museum we had just missed the final entry for the day, so we popped into Dawber Gardens where we saw this;

and then went back to the castle again.

G wanted to go up on the wall again, but we were intrigued by the Victorian prison in the grounds.

However, we went to the Keep first, where we were in for a little surprise.

It was used to bury prisoners! Bodies in quicklime and buried. Not quite the castle experience we had expected.

The prison was a little creepy, not as bad as I thought it would be, Lincoln has nothing on Alcatraz

The projected people were a nice touch, this one is in the surgeon’s room.

However, the creepiest was looking through a cell hatch, especially as it hadn’t been there before and then when I was alone taking photographs it appeared!

Possibly, the chapel was worst though!

That photo still cracks me up though! It wasn’t until we were looking at the pictures at home and FP had taken a closer one that I realised they were wearing masks! I thought they were just really shoddy mannequins!!

After that, we made our weary way home and vowed to rest the next day, easy enough as the weather forecast said rain!

Wow! I got tired just reading about all you did. Totally cool day though. I love canal boats – they have so much individuality. Sounds like you guys are having a great stay-cation.
Pictures are really coming on Lindsay! Love the galloping horse one! I reckon our sister has some photographic catching up to do!
